A Brief History
The Mifflinville Cemetery in Mifflinville, Pennsyvania, is located between Market Street and Ann Street and was provided for in the original town layout dated 11August 1794. The deed states, “a certain portion of said land as thus marked and laid out should be used by sundry persons, adventurers, occupiers, and owners of land of said town as a cemetery or burying ground…”. Many of the earliest stones are etched in German and some are simply fieldstones used as markers. The earliest stones are in the middle two sections of the cemetery (Old North and Old South Sections) and were placed in a rather haphazard manner.
On 12 June 1918, the Mifflinville Cemetery Company was incorporated. The intent was to oversee the maintenance of the property. Following incorporation, the grounds were surveyed and a layout of plots was made.
The original grounds were enlarged by two additional plots of ground. The first addition (the Berninger Section), was acquired in 1961 when a one-hundred foot wide piece of property was donated by Mrs. Rose Drum, Eva Specht, and the Berninger Estate. The second addition was the Valley View Cemetery (the Valley View Section), that was purchased in 1963 from the Women’s Civic Club. The Valley View Cemetery had been incorporated as a new cemetery in 1939.
The Memorial Day Parade is a long-standing tradition in Mifflinville and is a popular parade for the community. The parade is led by veterans from our community followed by the local Boy and Girl Scouts, a local school band, tractors driven by members of the local farming community, antique cars and trucks, floats from local churches, clubs and businesses and finally, the parade ends at the Mifflinville Cemetery where a program is held to honor the veterans and our great country. The assembly place for the parade is the old German Schoolhouse where drinks and light refreshments are served to the parade members. The German Schoolhouse houses memorabilia from the area and is open to the public that morning.
